Can I be arrested for violating “social distancing,” “stay at home,” or “shelter in place” orders related to coronavirus and COVID-19?

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan issued an order to take effect at 8pm on Monday, March 30 for every Marylander to stay at home unless the reason to go out is absolutely essential, such as buying food or medicine. While these stronger restrictions are new, there has been an order in place related to social distancing already, restricting any gatherings for more than ten people and there was at least one arrest for violating that order by holding a bonfire for 60 guests. It would stand to reason that there could be arrests in Maryland for violating the newer order, as well.

The Law Offices of Christopher L. Peretti will be open even as courthouses are closed, but working remotely via telephone and video conferencing in order to follow the Governor’s orders for the safety, health and well-being of our community.
